With Mobile, Tomorrow is Today

Many of us seem to think a ‘Minority Report’ type lifestyle is in the far and distant future. However…it’s not. Ok, flying cars and time travel may be unfeasible at this current moment in time, but would you believe me if I told you that the following scenario was all possible with your mobile handset?

“Its 6.30am on a Monday morning. Your alarm has gone off half an hour too early. You rub your eyes, haul yourself out of bed and open the curtains, only to be greeted by a blanket of blinding white. A heavy snow storm has hit the country, causing absolute chaos on the roads and transport networks. It’s a good job then that your mobile checked local weather reports in advance and recognised that there had been heavy snowfall in your area (by checking the GPS location), and has been kind enough to have woken you up that little bit earlier to give you extra time to get into work (and to de-ice your windscreen!).

Into the kitchen you go to get your coffee and you pop your mobile handset on the side in a dock. Whilst doing so, you can control any electronic equipment in your house, just because your mobile is programmed as a universal remote control for all your kit. So a button press and the TV is on to fill you in on current affairs.

After scrubbing up for the day of work you leave the house. As you approach the car, you pull out your mobile handset and with a press of a few buttons, you have unlocked the car and started the engine.

Into your car you pop and stick your mobile in the holder on the dashboard. You open up the navigation software, which has also recognised the trouble caused by the adverse weather, so has taken the liberty of automatically finding a quicker route to work by monitoring traffic congestion in the key areas on your usual journey.

You arrive at work, earlier than expected despite the weather. But there is no time to relax, you have a meeting straight away! You gather your bits from the office and head straight to the boardroom. After a long (and enthralling….) meeting, you check your phone only to be greeted by 10 missed calls! It’s a good job then that your mobile identified your GPS location and recognised you were at work and in turn switched your phone to silent and diverted calls to your work answer phone.

After chasing up the calls and doing your morning chores, you decide to go get an early lunch. But rather than settle for your usual supermarket sandwich, you fancy a change. You pull out your mobile phone, open an application and simply enter the term ‘lunch’. As you hold up the phone to your viewpoint, a series of icons show up on the screen, overlaying the real time images, showing restaurants, bars and takeaways to choose from. You select the closest sandwich shop and request to be guided there. A set of walking directions are automatically generated and take you to a quaint little sandwich shop.

After selecting the biggest and most attractive looking baguette, you take a seat at your table and watch the world go by. The waitress approaches the table to request payment, but without the usual card pin entry device or asking for cash. Instead she holds a mobile phone with a small plastic attachment. You hand over your card, which is in turn swiped through the attachment. You sign your name on the touch screen interface, and request for the receipt to be sent to your email address via the application. But as to avoid fraud, the waitress is shown a picture of you via the app to ensure it is your card! Always nice to see the security measures in place!”

To be honest….I could go on forever! Many mobile users aren’t aware of the huge array of applications and functionality available to them, which is why marketing your application is just as important as the creative and thought that goes into the app itself.

Got an idea? Likelihood is that it’s already been done or conceptualised!
