Summer time is here. The weather may not be reliable, but our steady stream of eager interns from Bournemouth University is. First to take up a seat in our innovation labs this year was Adam Tavener. Adam is an Interactive Media Production student, who had 4 weeks with us to further his skills, broaden his industry experience, and of course, come up with something cool.
‘Pictured’ web app
Adam made this: http://labs.redweb.com/pictured
It’s a web app that juxtaposes content from two separate social networks, it illustrates a tweet using Instagram images.
“There’s plenty of apps and tools that hook into Twitter alone, some more useful and worthwhile than others, but Instagram offered an opportunity to explore a relatively new image sharing service. By coupling the continuous stream of images in Instagram to the continuous stream of text from Twitter I hoped to make something more organic and interesting.”
So how does it work?
“In a nutshell Pictured takes a tweet and turns it into a series of Instagram images. It does this by breaking a tweet down into words, filtering out the fluff, and then going off to Instagram to find an image tagged with a matching term. The result is an illustrated tweet. What I really enjoyed exploring was the merging of two continuously changing user generated datasets and producing an output that is constantly changing and updating.”
So if you’ve ever wondered what a particular tweet would look like, now’s your chance to find out
“Thanks to everyone at Redweb for their help and hospitality. I had an awesome four weeks.”
Above is a poster Adam made for us using his own Instagram stream, all images taken during his time at Redweb.
